| This comes from the Arabic (SCI) "Al Ahir Al Nahr", meaning "The End
of the River". The name had been used previously for a fainter star, theta Eridani, which is now called "Acamar". The name
indicates the star's location at the end of the long constellation of the River. Despite this star being visible from the
latitude of Alexandria, it was not mentioned by Ptolemy. This fact is cited as evidence for Ptolemy's catalogue having been
based on that of Hipparchus, who observed from further north in Rhodes. |
